Akamai set out to enhance their leaders’ skills and behaviors to deliver against market challenges and to take advantage of future opportunities.
We partnered with Akamai and designed a bespoke Leadership Academy (LA) and Advanced Leadership Academy (ALA) for middle to senior-level leaders, built around our Pi2 Leadership Impact Model. The Academies aimed to bring fresh and engaging ways of delivering the priority skills that Akamai’s leaders needed now, and in the future. Akamai wanted to future-proof the leadership pipeline so that people on the bench are ready to step in when opportunities become available.
We adopted, with Akamai, a Design Thinking approach and created, prototyped, and tested a blended development experience. The experience included the use of actors, simulations, diagnostics, and coaching circles. This approach continues to be delivered. The content is reviewed and refreshed as and when needed. The Academies have their target skills measured via a multi-rater 360. We anchored the content around very distinct competencies that are aligned to the manager success profiles within the business, so they resonate with Academy participants.
Materials were created specifically for the academies cover:
1. Executive Presence
5. Psychological Safety
6. Leadership Narratives
7. Storytelling and Strategic Conversations
The content was delivered through a series of face-to-face/virtual events, coaching circles, a digital platform, and discussion forums. The work of the Academies was underpinned by the concept of Emotional Intelligence. With each year focusing on new topics. The Advanced Leadership Academy featured a business-focused Innovation project, using SprintbaseTM (a virtual collaboration tool) to develop projects set in an Investors Marketplace. These projects involved Senior Leaders as the endpoint.
The Academies partnership with Akamai has won two awards:
1. “With refreshingly direct conversations, I can convey my messages much more effectively in my conversations with upper management and across organizations. This helps trim down potential misunderstandings or conflicts, and gains a lot more trust and affinity with the peers”
2. “I developed more personal relationships with my team members, encouraging a higher level of psychological safety, while still maintaining accountability.”
3. “My team continues to lead Web Americas. The Leadership Academy helped me keep things fresh and injected new ideas.
Jay LaCroix, Director, Global Talent Development:
“Since partnering with PotentialSquared in 2016, Akamai has developed an incredibly strong leadership development brand through the Academy experiences. Colin and the team have provided exceptional thought-leadership through their design, delivery, and success measurement – which has transformed into positive behavior change from our leaders at Akamai.
PotentialSquared is more than a strategic learning partner. They challenge our team to think differently about developing leaders in a forward-thinking way, that anticipates the leadership challenges of tomorrow while addressing needs that are currently upon us. We’re grateful for this continued partnership with P2 and look forward to building upon these development areas into the future.”
Lauren Rollins, Learning and Development Specialist:
“Choosing to work with PotentialSquared has been the best decision for Akamai. They are a true partner in every sense of the word – honest, reliable, dependable, trustworthy, accountable, forward-thinking, humble, and passionate about leadership and development. They’ve taken the time to understand Akamai’s culture, our people, and what makes us unique.
The positive impact the academies have had on our leaders is profound and we continually hear rave reviews of the experience, examples of how managers have positively changed their behavior, and have waitlists of managers hoping to secure a seat in a future program. We couldn’t think of anyone better to have partnered with for our Global Leadership Academies for the last 5 years and can’t wait to achieve even greater success in the future with PotentialSquared by our side.”
Erin Webb Leadership Academy Coordinator:
